Mark J. Newman, PhD
Chief Scientific OfficerDr. Newman has over 35 years of experience in the biotechnology sector, serving in senior management roles at several companies, including GeoVax (Atlanta, GA), PaxVax (San Diego, CA), Pharmexa (Horsholm, Denmark), Epimmune (San Diego, CA), Vaxcel (Atlanta, GA), Apollon (Philadelphia, PA), and Cambridge Biotech (Boston, MA). In these roles, he led research, development, and early-stage clinical testing of protein, peptide, plasmid DNA, and viral-vectored vaccines, as well as multiple vaccine adjuvants. He has directed or contributed to teams responsible for advancing 10 vaccine or vaccine-related products from the research stage to Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials.
Dr. Newman also served as the primary scientific lead on numerous corporate teams conducting due diligence, technology assessments, intellectual property reviews, and portfolio management - activities that supported strategic planning, licensing, corporate partnerships, and mergers and acquisitions.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Newman has authored or co-authored 112 peer-reviewed scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters. He is a named co-inventor on more than a dozen issued U.S. and PCT patents, all related to vaccine technologies. He has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on numerous U.S. government research grants and contracts, and continues to serve as a technology expert reviewing grants and contracts for the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Newman earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. with honors in biology and animal science from The Ohio State University, where he followed a pre-veterinary medicine curriculum. He received his Ph.D. in Immunology from the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia). He completed four years of postdoctoral training at Cornell University and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, under contract with the National Cancer Institute, NIH. Before entering the biotechnology industry in 1989, he served as a full-time faculty member at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine for four years.
